Here are a few tips to consider when using a clamp.
Choose the right clamp
Always select an appropriate clamp for the workpiece or application in mind. Consider the size and weight of the workpiece while bearing in mind the features of the clamp, including its strength, opening capacity, and throat depth (see What is a clamp’s capacity? for more information).
Check it
Before you use your clamp, ensure that all parts are in working order.
Use protection pads
Some clamps, such as G clamps, may require the use of pads on the jaws to avoid marking the surface of the workpiece.
Security is key
Always make sure the jaws of the clamp are closed tightly on the workpiece, so that there is no chance of it moving during applications.
Keep it clean
Make sure the clamp is clean before use to avoid getting any oil or debris on the workpiece, as this may damage or stain it.
Don’t force it
Never use wrenches, pliers or hammers to tighten a clamp.
