A buck saw is essentially an earlier version of the bow saw. A buck saw is essentially an earlier version of the bow saw.

It has a long coarse-toothed blade set in a wooden frame. However, unlike a bow saw, it has an H-shaped frame rather than a curved one. Whereas the angle grinder has been designed for small spaces the buck saw has been designed to take of business on larger projects.

Although the buck saw has been around for centuries, it’s unlikely that you will find one sitting on the shelf of your local DIY shop.

Buck saw has largely been replaced by the Bow saw

Why not?

The buck saw has largely been replaced by the bow saw, which does the same job but is generally seen as being easier to use, and usually less expensive. A bow saw has a hollow steel frame which is often much lighter than the buck saw’s solid wooden one.

Buck saw is still used, particularly in North America The bow-shaped design is also seen by some as more compact, compared to the H-shaped frame found on buck saws.

However, the buck saw is still used, particularly in North America, with many people making their own from wire and old bits of kindling.

Why is it called a buck saw?

All bow saws have large teeth with deep gullets for fast aggressive cutting through wood. “Bucking” was a term that used to refer to the rough cutting of logs ready for use as firewood, something a buck saw is specifically designed to do.
