Angle Grinders - FAQ's

What is the use of a grinding machine or angle grinder?

A grinding machine (which is more commonly known as an angle grinder, side grinder or disc grinder) is commonly used in a range of places including car garages, workshops and construction sites. They come in a vast range of sizes and offer different variations in power and durability. That is because they have become such a versatile tool that they are now known for having a range of different uses. Models now vary in design with some more specialise in carrying out one heavy-duty task whilst others offer a good finish on a range of different tasks. These different tasks range from cutting metal, sometimes stone or concrete and even for polishing surfaces. The blades of grinding machines vary according to the material the angle grinder is being used on and many come with detachable blades for quick swaps.

They are most commonly known under the name angle grinder. However, the name angle grinder can be a little misleading because angle grinders are used both for cutting through material, smoothing edges of masonry as well as for grinding. This used to mean that the purchaser would have to choose the right angle grinder for the specific job they needed it for. However, with the technological advances over the last 5-10 years, modern angle grinders are now much more multifunctional. This means that when you are considering which angle grinder would be right for you, the factors you should be looking at are disc size, the power output of the motor, arbor size and also the power source.

Understandably one of the main concerns when operating an angle grinder is safety, for many, it becomes the number one issue. Of course, as with all power tools, you can’t remove all danger from operating an angle grinder. But, all of the angle grinders included on our list of the best angle grinders have additional safety features that increase their safety, making them easy to use even for first-time or non-professional users.

Angle grinders can generally be categorised by the size of the disc. In most cases, they tend to range from 4 to 12 inches. If you’re talking about completing standard DIY projects with an angle grinder then you are probably looking at discs from 4 to 4.5 inches. As you move into the professional use of angle grinders (for example mechanics or contractors) then the size of the disc increases depending on the planned use of the angle grinder.

What can you do with an angle grinder?

What we love about angle grinders is how versatile these machines are. Not only do they come in a variety of different models and sizes but they also offer a range of different motor powers and also different power sources. Having said all that, you can get most tasks done with a popular 4.5-inch grinder. These versatile models are great for grinding metal, cutting and grinding tiles, outing mortar, polishing, sanding and also sharpening. If you have a workshop, garage or you’re a contractor then a good quality power tool is a must-have tool to allow you to get on with your projects.

As with using any power tools, there are risks associated and care should be taken when you are operating them. You will notice that all of the tools in our list of best angle grinders have extra safety features included within their design. These host of different safety features help minimise the risk of injury when using an angle grinder. At Wonkee Donkee we advise you to always read the safety instructions of power tools before using them to minimise the risk to yourself and others.

Can you use an angle grinder to cut metal?

The short answer is yes. Angle grinders are incredibly versatile tools and are great for doing pretty much everything from cutting rebar to polishing. However, when it comes to cutting metal the angle grinder really stands out in comparison to other power tools. High-quality angle grinders come with different wheels and attachments to swap in and out depending on the material you are cutting.

To cut metal you should always make sure that you have the correct wheel attached. This will give you a clean cut through the material ensuring your work looks professional. At Wonkee Donkee we would advise using a cut-off wheel when you are cutting through metal. The cut-off wheel is essentially like a thin version of a grinding wheel and is built specifically to carry out tasks such as cutting metal piping, cutting sheet metal plates and even sometimes cutting dimensional metal.

How to remove an angle grinder disc?

This is an important question to ask as it is important to remove and change angle grinder discs safely in order to protect yourself and stay safe when operating these power tools. There are a couple of different ways to remove an angle grinder disk and this really depends on the model of the angle grinder as well as what tools you have available. The first thing you need to do when changing an angle grinder disk is to make sure you turn off the power source and ensure that your angle grinder is switched off.

If your angle grinder comes with two factory spanners that look a little bit like flattened wrenches you can use these to remove the discs. You will see that one looks like a normal wrench whilst the other looks like a two-pronged fork. Next, you will need to find the bolt to loosen the angle grinder disc. This will typically be located between the disc and the tool’s motor. Once you have located these now use the wrench like spanner to secure the bolt. After you have secured the bolt, turn the two-prong spanner in the opposite direction. You may find that the first time you remove a disc it can be a bit cumbersome, but after a while, you will find you can remove discs in next to no time.

If your angle grinder doesn’t come with these added tools or you can’t find them there are alternative ways to remove discs from angle grinders. Below we have some examples of how you can remove angle grinder discs using various tools you may have.

Remove angle grinder discs with vice grips

Firstly, you need to attach the vice grips to the bolt securing and holding the disc into the drive. Now that you have the vice grips in place this will prevent any spinning during the next stage. Once you have the bolt secured, insert a screwdriver into one of the holes between the disc and the motor and pull in the opposite direction of the disc arrow. Next, keep turning until the disc is removed from the angle grinder.

Removing an angle grinder disc without tools

You can also remove a disc without the use of tools. We would not advise this as it can cause damage to the angle grinder as well as reduce the tightness of the bolt and thus the securing function for the angle grinder disc. Using the palm of your hand try striking the disc in the opposite direction of the disc arrow. Over time, this should cause the nut to loosen enough for you to be able to remove this with your fingers and remove the angle grinder blade.

What are the main functions of an angle grinder?

As we have previously mentioned there are a range of different functions that an angle grinder can complete. Below we have made a list of the most common tasks carried out by an angle grinder.

Cleaning

Actually angle grinders are great at cleaning different materials such as cement or rust from various surfaces. Most angle grinders come with an attachment like a wire cup. When cleaning with the wire cup attachment you should always try to ensure that the brush is spinning away from the edge of the tool you’re cleaning. This is because it avoids the possibility of any kickbacks in your direction, keeping you safe.

Cutting Rebar

When it comes to cutting through tough materials such as concrete the angle grinder is your go to tool. You will need to attach a metal cut off wheel and ensure that it is secured tightly. Next, you need to drop the metal cut off wheel right through the material. You want the weight of the tool to control the drop, whilst also maintaining a firm grip for control. Most professionals find the angle grinder much easier quicker and more effective at cutting through tough materials than a hacksaw. After all why spend an hour on a cutting task manually when it can be done in 5 minutes with a power tool.

Scoring Tile

By attaching a diamond blade you can score right through the middle of a tile with ease. This may be necessary when you need to cut a hole for an outlet or trim a tile down to size. To do this you should simply mark the outline the size of the hole or cutting line before securing the tile on a workbench (ideally with a clamp). Next, score about one-eighth of an inch with the angle grinder (which most people would agree is easier and faster than if you were doing it with a tile cutter).

Sharpening Blades

When it comes to sharpening your other tools the angle grinder is awesome. Secure the blade in a vice clamp and adjust the blade guard ensuring you are protecting yourself from sparks. Next, all you need to do is to gently place the angle grinder on the blade whilst applying light pressure.

Grinding Out Mortar

When you attach a tuck-pointing wheel to your angle grinder you can grind out old loose bits and mortar. All you need to do is make two times 3-3.5 inch drills at an angle from each other, clear out the joint keeping it roughly ⅛ of an inch away from the brick.

Which is the best angle grinder?

Now you see that’s a tough question to answer because what is the best angle grinder for you really depends on what you need to use an angle grinder for. The best angle grinder for a DIY enthusiast who wants it for a range of tasks now and again will be completely different from the best angle grinder for a mechanic or a professional contractor. When choosing the right angle grinder you also need to consider how often it will be used and the intensity of the workload.

There are a few key questions that need to be answered before you can narrow down the options of which angle grinder is best for you. That is why at Wonkee Donkee our power tool reviews cover every model available on the market that we think is worth knowing about. As we just mentioned, it is difficult to pick which is the best angle grinder and recommend it for you. So at Wonkee Donkee we have picked our favourite two angle grinders and explained why below:

The Makita 9557 PBX1 angle grinder takes some beating, in both senses of the word. Firstly, as one of the best angle grinders available on the market, but also as an extremely durable power tool able to withstand heavy workloads. The best thing about this Makita angle grinder is that it is a great option for both professional contractors as well as for home DIY enthusiasts. It sports a 7.5 amp motor which is more than ample for its compact size and we love the durable aluminium case which allows it to take a real battering without getting damaged whatsoever. Makita has also made this angle grinder practical making it able to run off both AC and DC power sources allowing you to work in a workshop with a power source but also out and about with its rechargeable battery.

Our final reason we love this angle grinder is the no-nonsense approach that Makita have built it with, they have focused on creating a high-quality angle grinder with no frills or fancy gimmicks and it has definitely paid off. Call us old fashioned but this combination of simple robust design with high power output and dual power sources make the Makita 9557 PBX1 our Wonkee Donkee top pick for the best angle grinder.

Our second favourite is the Metabo WEV15-125 angle grinder, mainly because this power tool is a monster. It is larger than most of the other angle grinders we have reviewed but this is due to an epically powerful 1550 watt motor that delivers 11000 RPM. However, this Metabo angle grinder is not just all about power. It has as a cutting-edge design that includes an airflow system allowing for automatic cooling of the angle grinder whilst in use. This means that it is able to work at full power for much longer periods than most competitors on the market today, which is perfect if you use an angle grinder regularly. This power tool is really a contractors best friend and if you find yourself working on projects where you are cutting cement or rock for extended periods of time then you cannot get any better than the Metabo WEV15-125 angle grinder.

Angle Grinders Safety Precautions

When operating an angle grinder these are the safety precautions you should keep in mind:

Always wear a facial guard and work gloves.

Remember to unplug the grinder when you are switching wheels or attachments.

Try to maintain a firm grip at all times.

If your angle grinder includes a guard then ensure it is on before use.

When adding a new wheel always run it for a few minutes in a safe area to ensure it has no defects.

When positioning yourself you want the debris to be flying away from you and downwards. You also want the wheel to spin away from and not into sharp edges. This is because if a wheel catches a sharp edge it can cause the sharp object to be thrown or kicked back your direction.

Try to keep Sparks away from flammable objects.

Whenever you can, try to ensure the material you are working on is properly secured.
