Roughing out a sculpture with a scutch chisel and scutch comb Scutching tools can be used to remove stonework from the corners of the block at the start of carving to reveal the rough outline of the sculpture.
Feathered, dotted and groove effect on stone A scutch chisel creates a series of grooves on a sculpture when it is hit along the surface. A scutch hammer can also create a feathered or dotted effect on the surface of the stone.
