Most pick-up tools have a strong neodymium magnet on the end which attracts ferromagnetic materials. When aimed at the intended object, the magnet will attract it to the pick-up tool. The object can then be pulled to reach.
Clawed pick-up tools work to reach all objects. The handle is retractable to open and close the clawed end. Once the tool has reached the desired object, the handle is pulled to open the claws around the object, and released to close them around it.
