What are the parts of a lift hand magnet?

Magnet

The main component of a lift hand magnet is a block magnet which runs along its length.

Handle

The handle is used to aid in the lifting of ferromagnetic material.

Some varieties of lift hand magnet handles have a rubber coating which increases the user’s grip on the magnet. This is useful when it comes to lifting large pieces of hot sheet steel.

Casing

A lift hand magnet has an aluminium or stainless steel casing. These metals are both corrosion resistant which is beneficial to a lift hand magnet due to its extended use outside.

  Strong and light weight

Stainless steel is the stronger material therefore it can have a better quality and durability than aluminium. The stainless steel casing on a lift hand magnet is preferred for use in industrial circumstances, for example lifting laser cut steel sheets in a factory. Aluminium, however, is more lightweight so may be preferable if using for a prolonged period of time or for odd jobs around the home.

The casing of a lift hand magnet has two roles:

1. To hold the magnet in position

2. To focus the magnetic field to the bottom section of the tool. The non-magnetic materials used to make the casing stop the magnetic field of the magnet permeating the sides and top of the lift hand magnet.

Trigger

The trigger, also known as the cam lever, is available on the trigger lift hand magnet. It is the magnet’s release system and is used to release the magnet from any magnetic material it is attached to.

  Holding a lift hand magnet

A release mechanism is needed due to the size of the magnet’s pull force which makes it very difficult to remove from any metal surface.

When the trigger is pulled towards the handle, the magnet is pulled away from the surface of the material.
