What is Steel Quality?

BS 1407 UK Specifications for Steel.

To ensure that the steel is of a good quality, requirements stating how different steels are to be produced are in place. This requirement is known as the ‘British Standards’ specification and has the letters BS followed by an identification number representing the type / grade of steel.

Example – The main composition (element/alloy mix) of silver steel is defined by UK specification BS-1407, and is as follows: carbon (C) 0.95–1.25, manganese (Mn) 0.25–0.45, chromium (Cr) 0.35–0.45, silicon (Si) 0.40 max.

In the annealed state it has a hardness of 27 HRC. It can be hardened to 64 HRC through heat treatment.
