What is Mild Steel?
Mild steel (AISI 1018 mild/low carbon steel) – This type of steel is the least expensive of most steel types and is the most commonly used.
Virtually every type of product created from steel is mild steel. It is an extremely versatile material. It is used for producing; pipes, armours, knives, bullets, nuts, bolts, chains, hinges, car parts, panels for cars and white goods such as washing machines, street signs, fence posts, wire, plate, tin cans, key rings, almost anything you can think of will be made from mild steel.
It is supplied in various forms, such as; round bar, flat bar, plate, angle plate, wire, mesh, square bar, hexagonal bar, tube and sheet.
Mild steel is relatively strong. It has good weldability due to it’s lower carbon content and has the ability to flex slightly rather than distort and crack.
Unfortunately, mild steel has poor resistance to corrosion and needs a protective coating applied to it to help prevent rust. Mild steel can be magnetised due its ferrite (iron) properties.
