Once a blade has become dull it will need replacing. The method used to remove a blade depends on the blade securing mechanism which a craft knife uses. For more information on the different types of blade securing mechanisms, see What are the parts of a craft knife?
The following instructions detail how to remove a blade and insert a new one on a craft knife with a collet.
Step 1 – Open collet
To release the blade, the collet which secures it will need to be opened. Twist the collar to the left (with the blade away from you) in order to open the collet and loosen the blade.
Step 2 – Remove blade
Carefully remove the dull blade from the handle and dispose of it.
Step 3 – Insert new blade
Insert a new blade into the slot at the end of the handle.
Step 4 – Lock handle
Rotate the knurled collar to the right in order to close the collet. This will fasten the new blade securely within the handle.
Once the blade has been replaced, your craft knife will be like new and ready to use.
