Choosing whether a pin or pinless moisture meter is best for you depends on a several factors, including application, usage and availability. Both pin and pinless moisture meters have their limitations and neither are totally accurate.

Pin-type moisture meters are cheaper and more widely available than pinless meters.
Pin-types are better for rougher jobs where the end product does not require a perfect finish, because of the holes the pins leave behind.

Pinless moisture meters are best for flat surfaces, as the whole of the sensor needs to be in contact with the material being tested for best results.
They are considered less time-consuming and easier to use, as the sensor covers a larger area and can be slid around easily.
As this type is ‘pinless’, they are considered ‘non-invasive’ and do not leave any marks on the test piece.
Which moisture meter should you choose?
The price difference is quite significant between the types of meter and so unless you will be regularly using the device for tasks which require a clean finish, then the pin type meter is generally the more suitable option.
Pinless meters are quicker and easier to use but you need to decide whether this balances out the cost compared with your needs.
