The way pin-type moisture meters are used will slightly vary between models. However, the methods should all be similar to the following.
Step 1 – Set moisture meter
Turn on the moisture meter and ensure it is set to the mode (type of material) you are measuring. This varies from model to model and may not be necessary at all. Follow the instructions provided with your moisture meter.
Step 2 – Place moisture meter
Place the pins perpendicular to the substrate surface and then push them straight in as far as they will go. You can use a small hammer if the pins are separate from the main body of the tool.
Step 3 – Take reading
Take note of the value on the screen and whether your meter is giving a percentage or a reference reading.
Step 4 – Repeat
Repeat the process at intervals over the whole area. Take more readings at high risk spots, such as around windows when checking walls. For pieces of wood, you can work out an average by adding up all of your readings and then dividing by the number of readings.
