The digital micrometer is the most recent innovation in micrometer technology.
Digital micrometers are able to take extremely accurate measurements; most can measure to 0.0005 inches and 0.001mm.
Measurements can be taken in both metric and imperial units.
At any time, the user can convert their readings from one system to the other by pressing the “mm / inch” or “unit” button.
A zero button also allows the unit to be zeroed at any point. The feature is ideal for comparative and incremental measurements.
Readings provided by digital micrometers are electronically generated and shown on an LCD display. The LCD display may be instead of, or in addition to, the scales normally found on a micrometer.
The reading is instant and avoids user error by eliminating the need to intepret the scales.
Some micrometers have a data output connection which allows them to be connected to a computer.
Measurements can then be stored on a spreadsheet rather than recorded manually.
