The only alternative to manual riveters are powered versions, which include air hydraulic riveters and electric riveters. Both alternatives are suitable for installing blind rivets.
Air hydraulic riveters
This type of riveter works in the same way as a manual riveter. It is used to install blind rivets using a hydraulic system.
The nozzles of hydraulic riveters are the same diameter as on manual riveters and are interchangeable, so they can be used in both manual and hydraulic riveters. The system is automatic, so all you need to do is pull the trigger and the rivet is installed, saving time and energy.
The downside to hydraulic riveters are that they are expensive compared to standard riveters. If the riveter becomes damaged it will be costly to replace it.
Another disadvantage is that you need an air compressor for it to work. This increases costs and limits the areas you can work in.
Standard riveters require more effort but are a much cheaper option. They both do the same job, but if you regularly install rivets then an air hydraulic riveter might be the best option for you.
Electric riveters
This riveter does the same job as the standard and hydraulic riveters, but is powered by electricity. Electric riveters are available with or without a cord.
They are quick, require less effort and can be used anywhere if they are cordless. The nozzle fittings on electric riveters are usually the same size as on standard and hydraulic riveters.
A corded electric riveter is restricted with regard to the areas it can reach, although an extension lead will solve the problem in some situations.
Standard riveters are less expensive compared with electric riveters and do exactly the same job, albeit with a little more effort. If you find yourself constantly installing rivets, an electric riveter may be worth the additional outlay.
