Grate type dry wall rasps have large gaps between their teeth to remove more material from plasterboard. A grate rasp has a grate on its base instead of a blade. The grate has large gaps which help it to remove more material from the plasterboard than fine tooth blades.
Wooden handled grate rasp with a groove running it's length to prevent clogging with plaster

Wooden block handle

Rasps with a wooden block handle are the cheapest type available. As they are made using a basic rectangular block of wood, they are less ergonomic (comfortable to use) than other rasps. The underside of the block has a groove or notch that runs the length of the rasp. This helps prevent the rasp clogging up with dust and plaster.

Grate type dry wall rasps with a plastic handle are shaped to be more comfortable to use than wooden block handle rasps

Plastic handle

Grate type rasps with plastic handles are shaped to be more comfortable to use (ergonomic) than wooden block-handled rasps. The plastic handles are also lighter, but may make the tool too large to fit in a pocket.
