A dry wall rasp is a tool used to smooth the cut edges of plasterboard (known as drywall in America) or remove small amounts off plasterboard in order to correctly fit the plasterboard in a space.
What is plasterboard?
Plasterboard is comprised of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two thick sheets of paper. It is used in the construction of internal walls such as partition or stud walls; these may also be called dry walls, which is where the rasp gets its name from.
Why is plasterboard used?
Plasterboard allows builders to produce walls inside houses quicker and cheaper than with traditional lath and plaster. Depending on the thickness of the plasterboard sheet and what a manufacturer adds to the gypsum plaster during manufacture, plasterboard can also reduce sound transmission between rooms and improve fire resistance.
