When coving is fitted around a chimney breast you may have to cut small sections of coving with a mitre on each end. In some situations, such as when fitting coving around chimney breasts you may have a very small section of wall. On these walls it is better to fit one piece of coving with mitres cut at each end rather than using two pieces butted together.
You will have to pay more attention when measuring and cutting coving with a mitre at each end. This will create a neater look with fewer joints to sand over once the coving has been fitted. However, this does require paying more attention and care to the measuring and cutting of the coving.
Measurements should always be taken along the wall and marked on the covings wall edge not the ceiling edge. When taking measurements for a section of coving with mitres cut at each end, all measurements are taken along the wall (not ceiling) and are marked on the wall edge of the coving.
Internal and external mitre required on the short side sections of coving around a chimney breast. The following guide is given for the coving fitted to the short side sections of a chimney, that require an internal mitre cut at one end and an external mitre at the other.
External mitres of coving fitted to the face of a chimney breast. For the longer face of the chimney you will require a right-hand external mitre at the one end of the coving and a left-hand external mitre at the other.
Internal mitres of coving fitted either side of a chimney breast. For the wall sections either side of the chimney you will require right-hand internal mitre cutting on one end of the coving and a left-hand internal mitre on the other end.
Cutting the mitre joint on a section of coving using a cove mitre

Step 1 – Cut first mitre

If you are cutting the coving for the right side of the chimney (from the chimney’s point of view, looking out into the room), begin by first cutting a left-hand internal mitre at the far left side of your coving. For the coving fitted to the left side of the chimney, begin by cutting a right-hand internal mitre at the far right side of your coving.

Measuring the length of the wall

Step 2 – Measure wall

Then measure the length of the wall. Mark this length from the cut mitre, along the coving’s wall edge.

The cove mitre face you intend to use should be positioned so it's wall edge is touching the mark you have placed on the coving.

Step 3 – Position cove mitre

If the first mitre you cut was a left-hand internal mitre then place the right-hand face of the cove mitre up against the mark you have placed on the coving’s wall edge.

If the first cut was a right-hand internal mitre then place the left-hand face of the cove mitre up against the mark you placed on the coving’s wall edge.

Step 4 – Cut second mitre

With the cove mitre held in this position, cut the second mitre to achieve the length of coving you require.

Wonkee Donkee says: "You can also use this method to cut longer pieces of coving, reducing the number of joins between the pieces, achieving a cleaner finish that requires less sanding."
Follow Wobke Donkee's How to fix coving in place guide. Once you have cut the coving with the required mitres at each end, fix it to the wall following the same procedure as described on the How to fix coving in place section of How to cut internal mitres using a cove mitre.
