			The method for using a spokeshave is simple but to get it right is tricky and requires a lot of practice. These are the basic steps for both the push and pull stroke using a spokeshave. Before you begin, you should read the Tips on using a spokeshave page.

			For the pull stroke…
			Step 1- Hold spokeshave Grip the spokeshave accordingly. See: How to hold a spokeshave?

			Step 2- Place sole on workpiece Place the sole of the spokeshave onto the top of the workpiece.

			Step 3 – Pull spokeshave Pull the spokeshave towards you, along the workpiece, applying slight downward pressure and using your hands to feel the balance of the tool. Repeat this action until you have the desired shape.

			For the push stroke…

			Step 2- Place sole on workpiece Lay the spokeshave sole down on to the workpiece.

			Step 3- Push spokeshave Push the spokeshave away from you, along the workpiece, applying slight downward pressure and using your hands to feel the balance of the tool. Repeat this action until you have the desired shape.
