Chalk lines are used to impart long, straight lines onto the surface of an object to provide accurate guides prior to cutting, laying tiles, levelling posts, hanging wallpaper and many other tasks.
Some chalk lines may also be used as plumb-bobs to create vertically straight (‘plumb’) lines. A plumb-bob is simply a piece of string with a weight attached at one end. They are either held or hung from an object and used to make a straight guideline.
Chalk lines would be used to mark long lines over distances where using a ruler or straight edge tool would be impractical. Likewise, it would be impractical to use a chalk line to mark a surface that was only a few inches long.
