The first thing you need to do after preparing your chalk line for use is to pull out the string a little way. This is easily done by holding on to the hook and gently pulling. (If you haven’t prepared your chalk line, see the page entitled:How to prepare a chalk line.
Step 2 – Attach hook
Your next step is to attach the hook to the far end of the object you wish to impart a line on to. The hook may be placed over a nail or screw, or simply hooked onto the object via its claws.
Step 3 – Extend string line
With the hook attached to the surface you wish to impart a line onto, extend the string line to the near side of your object, keeping the string line taut as you do.
Step 4 – Hold string line in place
By holding the line with your finger or by pressing down the tip of the chalk line, you can hold the string in place and keep it taut at the same time.
Step 5 – Pinch string half way
Once the string line is in position, grasp the string (with a finger and thumb) at a point roughly halfway between the hook and the box.
Step 6 – Lift string line
Whilst keeping the string line taut, with your finger and thumb, lift the string line about 10-15cm (4-6 inches) off the surface of your object.
Step 7 – Release string line (“snap the line”)
Release the string line immediately and it will “snap” back down to the surface (like twanging the string of a bow and arrow). Through this motion, the string line will impart its chalk onto the surface and should leave you with a highly visible straight line to work with. This is known as “snapping the line”.
Tips for using a chalk line on your own
It can sometimes be difficult to use a chalk line if there is nowhere to secure your hook. If you are working on your own and have nobody to hold it for you, insert a nail or pin, or cut a small slit in the edge of your workpiece to keep the string secure.
If you have nowhere to secure your hook and you don’t want to permanently mark your work surface or leave a hole in it, then simply use a piece of tape to secure the hook in place.
