Step 1 – Decide which colour chalk

The first thing you want to do is decide which colour chalk you are going to use. Blue is considered a temporary, all-purpose colour, whereas red is more permanent, and white is ideal for indoor use.

Step 2 – Snip off cap

Using a pair of scissors or a utility knife, snip the top off the cap of your chalk bottle.

Step 3 – Pull out string

Pull out approximately 4 metres (12 feet) of string from the chalk line.

Step 4 – Open door

Open the little sliding door in the chalk line box.

Step 5 – Fill with chalk

Insert the cut tip of the chalk bottle into the open door and squeeze the bottle. This will force chalk in the reel. Fill it about half full.

Step 6 – Wind in string

Close the sliding door and wind in the string using the crank reel. This will help coat the the string in chalk.

Step 7 – Repeat and fill with more chalk

Repeat this process a few times by pulling out the string again, filling with more chalk and winding the string back in. Do not fill the box completely.
