A shoe knife is a small, versatile hand tool with a variety of uses. It consists of a fixed metal blade which is usually attached to a wooden or plastic handle, and is also known as a shoemaker’s or cobbler’s knife.
As the name suggests, it was originally designed for use in shoemaking where tough, sharp blades were essential for cutting and shaping leather.
Nowadays it’s also widely used in the rubber, plastic, paper and textile industries.
There are several different styles of shoe knife, with blades varying in length and thickness. Some have square blade ends while others may be tapered, round or pointed. At the top end of the market are specialised knives for leatherwork or bookbinding, but there are also many others.
