How to cut out leather with a shoe knife |
||||
![]() |
When cutting leather you need as sharp a knife as possible. Some people prefer pointed or curved blades, especially for making intricate shapes, while others use the corner of a square-tipped knife held at an angle. | |||

Always use a cutting mat to avoid damaging the work surface. Plastic or granite surfaces are the most widely used, but you can also use rubber or glass mats.

Step 3 – Pull knife through leatherGrasp the knife with your index finger just above the blade to give you as much control as possible. Holding the leather in place with your other hand, pull the knife through the material in a slow, smooth motion, pressing downwards as you go. |
