Screw extractors can be purchased individually or as a set in a variety of sizes. Information such as the sizes and quantities of screw extractor can usually be found in the product spec or on the case. Sometimes, the size of the screw extractor and even the size of screw it can remove will be lasered or etched onto the side of the extractor.
Screw extractor sizes
The size of the screw or bolt that can be extracted is directly related to the size of the extractor.
An example is the micro spiral fluted extractors with drill out ends and spiral fluted extractors with drill out ends. Both do the same job, however, the size of each make them suitable for different sized screws and bolts.
A screw’s size is presented as a number from #0-24. Screw extractors are sized according to the number screw they can remove.
The following table provides various measurements for the shank diameter in inches (fractional and decimal) and millimetres. The shank diameter is measured across the smooth portion just above the threads.
If the screw is embedded, then you can hold the end of the screw extractor against the screw or bolt to see if it is a suitable size.
You can even drill a pilot hole with a small drill bit around 1.5 mm (1/16″) or 3 mm (1/8″) and test the extractor end in the pre drilled hole.
