Step 1 – Inspect wall

Before applying any type of coating to the area, preparation must be carried out first. This basically involves making sure there are no loose bricks, mortar, previous coverings or flaky bits of paint or debris left on the area which is to be sprayed.

Step 2 – Fill voids and remove or score (scratch) paint

Some wall coatings will not cover joints in block or brickwork and so these will have to be repaired beforehand.

If you are trying to cover a painted surface, then the wall coating is only as strong as the paint to which it is being applied. This needs to be avoided if possible, with the painted surface being removed or scratched to allow a good adhesion of the coating to be applied to the wall.

Step 3 – Dampen wall

Once the wall to be sprayed is prepared as above, the wall area must be washed down and cleaned free from dirt, grease or grime.

The wall needs to be damp (not sodden/soaking) to ensure that the coating being applied sticks well to the wall. Allow the water to soak in and disperse before coating.
