The alternative to the lino knife for cutting floor coverings is the utility knife.
Utility knives
Utility knives are very versatile tools used to cut wood, cardboard, plastic and a variety of materials. They can be used for a number of tasks including those which lino knives can perform.
These types of knives can be used freehand or along a straight edge.
Utility knives come with either snap-off, replaceable or fixed blades which are not normally resharpened.
The snap off blades can be a problem when applying pressure to the knife: the blade could easily snap while cutting and cause injury or damage to the surrounding work surfaces.
If you already have a utility knife it will be cost effective to purchase curved blades for it. This will allow your utility knife to perform in a similar way to a lino knife. Although a utility knife is a very suitable alternative, lino knives do have many advantages.
A lino knife is a dedicated tool for cutting thin floor coverings. They are always “ready to go” for the purpose intended, for example you don’t have to change from a straight to a curved blade.
The blade of a lino knife can be resharpened and is therefore more environmentally friendly – you don’t have to continually dispose of the blades.
If your lino knife is damaged and can’t be fixed, buying a replacement is relatively inexpensive.
A utility knife (that is fitted with a different type of blade) can be used in conjunction with a lino knife for different parts of the same job, without having to change blades. Whatever you choose, lino and utility knives are both durable and excellent options when it comes to cutting floor covering.
