Frosting, (or flaking as it can also be called), is when a patterned finish is put on a polished or scraped flat surface.
Why is frosting used?
Frosting is used as a way of increasing oil retention on scraped or polished surfaces. This is important with machine parts in order to keep them lubricated and moving smoothly instead of with a sticky and jerky movement.
Without the frosting, the oil would run away, leaving just the two metal surfaces in contact with each other, which is likely to cause seizure of the machine.
