A voltage detector is an electrician’s tool used to detect or test the voltages in varying circuits. An electrician may use a voltage detector to ensure a source is safe before beginning work.
A detector is a device used to find or locate something, in this case – live electricity. Electricity detectors can also be referred to as testers, though their job is to detect.
Most voltage detectors resemble pens, while others are slightly more box-shaped. However, both can detect live electricity without coming into contact with the supply.
There are many names used to refer to these tools, they include: non-contact voltage detectors, non-contact voltage testers, voltage sniffers, power detectors, voltage pens and voltage detector pens.
