C-5-1 Small caulker, metal blade, wooden handle caulker The handles of caulkers are traditionally made from hardwood but can be found in plastic varieties.

Plastic caulker handles

C-5-2 Plastic handled caulker, rubber blade, spreading plaster Plastic-handled caulkers are the cheapest in the range and as such are perhaps less durable. They would be ideal for small or one-off jobs as they are easily disposable.

Don’t be too hasty to throw it away though, caulkers are useful tools and have a wide range of applications!

Hardwood caulker handles

C-5-3 Wooden handled caulker, rubber blade, caulker plastering tools Caulkers with hardwood handles are typically the most expensive but are very durable and robust.

They are excellent tools for the professional or beginner, and should last you a long time even through the most extensive jobs.

Moulded caulker handles

C-5-4 moulded plastic handle, caulker, tool, plastering Moulded handles are usually made from plastic and are non-detachable.

When using a caulker to spread mixture, a moulded plastic handle is at a higher risk of snapping when under pressure.

If you damage the caulker handle or blade there are no replacement parts, but fortunately moulded plastic caulkers are cheap to replace.

Detachable caulker handles

C-5-5 Caulker with detachable handle, rubber blade, plastering tool Detachable handles are usually made from hardwood. Caulkers with detachable handles have an indented slot or grove in which the blade is locked, the advantage being that if you damage either part of the caulker it can be replaced.

Moulded vs. detachable caulker handles

C-5-6 Having to choose, choosing, choice plastering tool, caulkers A plastic caulker with a moulded handle may be cheaper to buy, but it might not be as durable as a caulker with a hardwood handle.

A caulker with a hardwood handle may be more durable and has the advantage of an interchangeable blade, but it’s likely to be more expensive.
