There are three main types of basin tap wrench:1. Fixed basin tap wrenches
2. Adjustable basin tap wrenches
3. Box spanner tap wrenches
Fixed basin tap wrenches
Standard fixed basin wrench
The fixed basin tap wrench looks similar to a traditional spanner with the addition that its fixed jaws point outwards, perpendicular to the shaft.
This allows it to be rotated on its vertical axis and can be used in much tighter spaces than a traditional spanner. Though you can use it both horizontally and vertically.
There are many different makes and models of fixed basin wrench. Whilst these may vary in price, size, and colour, they all perform the same job of removing backnuts and tap connectors located in confined spaces
Box spanner tap wrenches
Standard box spanner basin wrench
A standard box spanner tap wrench typically consists of a double-ended hexagonal box spanner and a T-bar handle. It is called a box spanner because it encompasses the nut on all sides as opposed to a traditional open-ended spanner.
Box spanner basin wrenches may be bought separately, without a T-bar handle (so you don’t end up with dozens of spare handles).
Multi-function box spanner basin wrench
There are specialist varieties of box spanners that are designed to remove stubborn or rusted nuts.
The key characteristic of adjustable basin tap wrenches is that they have jaws that pivot, allowing them to open and close so that they can be used with a variety of different sized nuts and fittings.
Standard adjustable basin wrench
A standard adjustable basin tap wrench consists of a long shaft, a pair of jaws at one end and a T-bar handle at the other end.
The jaws of an adjustable basin wrench can open and close allowing them to be used on a wide range of different sized nuts.
Interchangeable jaws
Other types of adjustable basin wrench have sets of interchangeable jaws so that you can use them on a wide variety of different sized nuts and fittings.
Telescopic basin wrench
This is a telescopic adjustable basin wrench which can be extended or retracted depending on how much reach you need.
Bearhug basin tap wrench
The Bearhug basin tap wrench is another type of basin wrench that comes with two different sized fixed jaws for use on 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch backnuts. They have a small screw in the jaws that can be adjusted to grip the nut flats to make a tighter fit when turning. They also have a clip on the jaws that can be rotated so that it rests on the underside of the nut to aid location.
