Some properties – including some terraced houses and flats – share an external (outside) stopcock with neighbours.
If you’re not sure if you share a stopcock, check first with the neighbours or your water utility company.
Before turning off the shared water supply for whatever purpose, speak to all the neighbours who will be affected and agree a mutually acceptable time.
Depending on how long you expect the water to be off, you and your neighbours may need to plan ahead by filling containers with water for hot drinks and other purposes.
