diameter of copper pipe The size of a socket former always refers to the diameter of the driver or forming section. This measurement corresponds to the diameter of the copper pipe to be expanded.

This measurement may be advertised as size, diameter, driver size, AF size or stated as fitting Xmm and Ymm copper pipe. These measurements all refer to the same thing.

various sized socket formers Socket formers are available for various diameter copper pipes. The most common sizes of copper pipe used in plumbing are: 15mm (9/16″), 22mm (7/8″) and 28mm (1 1/8″). These are also the most widely available socket formers.
socket former with labelled driver section There are also combination socket formers with the ability to expand two different sized pipes in one tool. These will be found alongside the singular socket formers and are identified by their double driver section.

singe and double socket former The double formers are more beneficial if you need to expand multiple diameters of copper pipe. If you want a tool for a one off usage, then the single formers are cheaper but it would still be more expensive to buy two of them rather than a double former.
