Hook and loop sanding discs are very easy to attach and detach but can be prone to failure when sawdust clogs the loops and lessens the effectiveness of the grip.
To keep the effectiveness of hook and loop sanding discs at their best, try to keep them clean and free from sawdust at all times.
Peel and stick
The peel and stick variety of sanding disc has similar problems. It is prone to becoming coated in dust and can lose all stickiness. It can be frustrating if your disc keeps coming loose.
Dust extraction
In-built dust extraction and filtration systems are supplied on many random-orbit sanders. These systems may need regular cleaning for them to work effectively as they are not particularly heavy-duty and the small dust collectors will soon become full of sawdust.
Many woodworkers and carpenters using random-orbit sanders advise attaching (if possible) a workshop vacuum straight to the sander’s filtration pipe. This will increase the suction power and reduce the number of times you need to empty the dust collector.
