This type of swaging tool is entirely hand-operated, comprising two handles used to open and close a pair of bladed jaws in the same way in which a pair of scissors is operated. Therefore, this tool requires some hand strength to use.
A standard manual swaging tool can feature either three or five blades, divided between the top and bottom jaws so that they interlock.
This type of manual swaging tool can be used to swage pipes made of mild steel, or, rarely, copper.
Ergonomic manual swaging tool
This type of swaging tool works in the same way as the standard manual swaging tool, but features an ergonomic design incorporating a cranked head. Its head and jaws are attached at an angle of approximately 50 degrees to the handles, and are able to swage to a longer length (see: What manual swaging tool sizes are available?).
A cranked head such as this one helps to lessen the chance of wrist strain, as in most circumstances it should prevent the user from needing to position the hand at an awkward angle in order to use the tool.
This is ideal for swaging pipe ends in tight or confined spaces, or in otherwise difficult circumstances. The ability to swage in difficult positions is most useful when swaging pipe in situ – such as when attaching a new section of pipe to an existing one as part of an established system.

Compound action swaging tool

The amplification of the force exerted by the compound system of leverage used in a compound action swaging tool makes it suitable for use on tougher materials, such as stainless steel of up to 0.8mm thick.
