What are hand forks used for?

Although they are often overlooked by gardeners in favour of the trusty trowel, hand forks still have their uses, particularly when gardening in tight spaces.

Hand Forks – Weeding

Hand forks can be used to effectively extract shallowly-rooted weeds. They are particularly useful when working in very hard soil that cannot be broken up with a trowel, or when weeds are growing in between delicate, healthy plants that would be damaged by a larger tool.

Hand Forks – Aerating and Cultivating

The sharp tines of the tool are excellent at loosening and aerating soil and breaking up clods before planting.

In addition, a hand fork can be used to mix compost or additive into the soil which will help to encourage healthy plant growth.

Hand Forks – Planting and Transplanting

Although a trowel is usually employed for this task, a hand fork can also be used to transplant small or fragile plants and seedlings.

They are ideal for harvesting small root vegetables such as carrots, radishes and onions.
