A hacking knife is a thick-bladed, sturdy knife which looks similar to a cleaver. It could almost be considered a light hatchet in some applications.
The thick blade and tang (the continuation of the blade beyond its cutting section) together run the entire length of the knife. The back of the blade is designed to be hit with a hammer enabling it to cut through tough materials such as hard putty.
