Although different manufacturers make hacking knives in different sizes there is not a lot of variation between most of them.
Blade length
This is usually between 90 and 115mm (3½ and 4½”).
Total length
This is the total length of the tool from the tip of the blade to the end of the handle. It may not be given in many hacking knife descriptions, particularly if the blade length and handle length are listed. Most hacking knives have a total length of approximately 210mm (8¼”).
Blade width
This is probably where there’s the biggest variation between different hacking knives. The blade width can be anywhere between 30 and 50mm (1¼ and 2″).
Blade thickness
The blades of hacking knives are wedge shaped so you may see two measurements given for the blade thickness. The smaller one is the thickness at the blade’s narrowest point, just above the bevelled cutting edge. The larger one is the thickness at the blade’s widest point, which is usually around 5mm (3/16“)
Handle length
This will often not be listed, but is generally around 95mm (3¾”).
How much do hacking knives weigh?
As hacking knives are not very big tools they do not weight much, tipping the scales between 170 and 220g (6 and 8oz).
