Drain and chimney rods are tools used by plumbers and chimney sweeps as well as DIYers to unblock and clean drains, sewers, chimneys and flues. A drain or chimney rod set normally consists of several stiff but flexible rods, each typically 1m long (3’3″), which can be connected together end-to-end in order to reach the desired length.
The majority of drain and chimney rods are in fact the same thing, with the exception of nylon and fibreglass rods which have been designed for narrow flues and chimneys with tight bends.
Nylon and fibreglass rods would be far too thin and flexible to be used to clear blockages in a drain, but are extremely effective when used as a power sweeper for a chimney.
Once the rods and the appropriate tool (e.g. plunger, double worm screw) have been connected together, they are inserted into a drain or sewer from an access point, usually a manhole chamber, and used to dislodge a blockage.
