Building the corner leads first means you can use the step-like layers as a guide to filling in the levels of your brick wall.

The foundations you are laying onto should already be level, but as you lay your corner leads check with a spirit level to make sure the bricks are aligned. The brick line will help you keep everything level as you fill in the rows between your two corners.
