A spirit level can be used instead of a brick line to check that your wall is level. However, using a brick line means you won’t have to get your level out for every brick you lay which will save you time and effort.
A brick line really comes into its own when being used on longer walls. With a long wall you will be able to lay bricks much more quickly with the brick line as a guide instead of having to repeatedly pick up your spirit level. Be careful though – over a very long distance a brick line may sag in the middle, so be sure to keep it taut and level.
For very short walls, you may want to use just a spirit level, as setting up and moving a brick line for each level may be more time consuming. Be careful though: a spirit level is only accurate over the length of its body.
