Woodcarving chisels come in a wide range of sizes too numerous and varied to list here, but typically ranging from 0.5mm to 40mm (1/64″ to 1.5″)
Most woodcarving chisels (chisels, skews, gouges, fishtails) are measured by the widest part of their cutting edge.
Parting tools such as “V” gouges are measured by one of the sides of their cutting edge.
Novice woodcarving chisels
There are woodcarving chisels especially designed for novice users and they are characterised by their shorter shanks and blades. Their general shorter stature makes them easier to use and control, though some argue that they cannot cover as much ground as quickly as their professional counterparts.
Professional woodcarving chisels
Professional woodcarving chisels generally have longer shanks and blades than chisels designed for novices.
Palm-size woodcarving chisels
Palm-size woodcarving chisels have specially designed handles that fit into the palm. This pear-shaped design allows you to carve comfortably with accuracy and confidence whilst keeping fatigue to a minimum.
