As their name suggests, woodcarving chisels are used to carve wood. Carving is the process of shaping a material by removing small amounts of material from the whole until a pattern, design or image is formed.
Woodcarving chisels are used chiefly in two areas of woodcarving: sculpture and relief carving.
Relief carving
Relief carving is a type of woodcarving whereby figures, designs, and images are carved into a flat panel of wood.
The design only projects slightly from the panel of wood yet the carving is done in such a way that the images seem to rise up out of the wood. There are four types of relief carving, each distinguished by the depth to which the images are cut: low relief, bas relief, high relief, and pierced relief.
Low relief
Low relief carving is typically under 1.2cm (1/2″) in depth.
Bas relief
Bas relief carving is typically between 1.2 and 5cm (1/2″ and 2″) in depth.
High relief
High relief carving is typically over 5cm (2″) in depth.
Pierced relief
Pierced relief carving is when holes are carved right through the wood.
Sculpture
Sculpture is a type of three-dimensional art-form that works in a visual platform. Traditionally in sculpture, material is either taken away from (carving), or added to (modelling) a main body of material.
