Shop for Tarpaulins

A tarpaulin where an eyelet has broken off. Eyelets can easily be replaced or even added to a tarpaulin to create additional fixing points.
Eyelet Repair Kit; eyelet holder/grommet anvil; Eyelet punch tool; Hole punch/cutter This can be done using an eyelet repair kit.
When using an eyelet repair tool, a hammer will be required When using an eyelet repair kit such as the one in this picture, a hammer will also be required.
Cutting the hole for the eyelet

Step 1 – Create hole

With the hole punch/cutter placed where the hole is to be created, strike it with a hammer to cut a hole in the tarpaulin.

Step 2 – Insert lower half

Place the lower half of the eyelet on the eyelet holder, under the tarpaulin, so that it sticks up through the hole.

When doing this, you should turn the tarpaulin upside down, so that when the process is complete, the shank emerges from the underside of the tarpaulin.

Step 3 – Connect top half

Connect the top half of the eyelet so that the tarpaulin material is sandwiched between the pieces of the eyelet.

Step 4 – Strike with hammer

Place the “eyelet punch tool” on top of the eyelet, and strike with a hammer.

The Finished Grommet …et voila! You have just attached a new eyelet.
Wonkee Donkee says "When attaching a new eyelet to your tarpaulin, you might want to use a strong, solid surface, such as a block of wood, to avoid damaging surfaces. After all, you don’t want any nasty marks on your kitchen table."

Replacing eyelets using eyelet pliers

Eyelet pliers There are also several types of eyelet and grommet pliers. Some of these can be used on tarpaulins as an alternative method of attaching eyelets.
A telephone Some models, however, may not be suitable for putting eyelets in a tarpaulin, working with eyelets that are simply too small for the job.

It is advised that you check whether a particular tool is suited to use with a tarpaulin.

Cutting a hole in material using a set of eyelet pliers

Step 1 – Create hole 

Cut a hole in the tarpaulin for the eyelet to sit in. Some pliers may have a cutting feature built in to the tool.

Step 2 – Insert shank

Attach the eyelet to the material by pushing the shank through the hole, and then placing the washer on top, so that the tarpaulin is sandwiched between the two.

  Wonkee Donkee says: "Remember that once finished, the washer needs to sit on the underside of the tarpaulin.

Step 3 – Use pliers 

Place the eyelet and tarpaulin into the pliers and close the handle, applying enough force to secure the eyelet in place. Should this not secure the eyelet, you should use the pliers again.
