Step 1 - Mark your workpiece Mark on your work the point at which you want the centre of your hole to be.

Step 1 – Mark workpiece

Mark on your work the point at which you want the centre of your hole to be.

Step 2 - Set the distance between the pilot drill and the blade Use a ruler to set the distance between the pilot drill and the cutting point of the blade. This distance should be equal to the radius of the circular hole you want to cut. E.g. If you are looking to cut a circle with a diameter of 70mm, this distance will be 35mm (70÷2=35).

Step 2 – Set distance between pilot drill and blade

Use a ruler to set the distance between the pilot drill and the cutting point of the blade. This distance should be equal to the radius of the circular hole you want to cut.

For example, if you are looking to cut a circle with a diameter of 70mm (2.7in), this distance will be 35mm (1.3in).

70 ÷ 2 = 35

Wonkee Donkee says: 'When drilling metal, you should always use cutting oil for lubrication. The oil will ensure that the blade and the part are kept at a stable temperature and will protect the cutting blade, helping it to last longer.'
Step 6: When you are comfortable with your tank cutter, repeat this process and cut your real hole. When you are comfortable using your tank cutter, position the pilot drill bit on the centre mark you made earlier and repeat this process to cut your real hole.
