A screeding level is long, narrow tool, primarily used to level concrete floor coatings in a process known as screeding.
It is bulkier than an average level – a feature which is beneficial in the laying of floors, because the products to be smoothed can be dense. Screeding levels can be used in plastering, but their bulk makes them a less common choice for this, as they are more difficult to manoeuvre on vertical surfaces.
Although designed to move flooring products in the screeding process, the shape and features of a screeding level make it useful in other building and DIY tasks, like ruling and levelling.
The range of spirit levels does not usually include screeding levels, yet most have the spirit-filled bubble vials used to gauge whether a flat surface is level. What distinguishes a screeding level is its size; it is bulkier in all dimensions than most other levels. Its size and handles allow it to be used for smoothing, which other levels are not designed for.
