A plasterer’s brush is for roughening the plaster ready for the final coat.
It creates a surface for the next layer of plaster to be keyed in to. Keying in is where the plaster is pushed into a gap or hole so that it ‘grabs’ more efficiently and locks (like a key).
Step 1 – Grasp brush
The plasterer’s brush is held on the palm of the stronger hand, under the strap, and held in place by the thumb and another finger.
Step 2 – Drag brush across surface
It is then dragged across the newly applied surface whilst applying light pressure.
Step 3 – Continue across whole area
Continue this across the whole surface, until you are left with a completely scratched coat.
