Damaged spring inside the handle of a pair of locking pliers You may need to replace the spring on your Mole grips/locking pliers, because it has been damaged, for example when the grips/pliers have been repeatedly used to hold hot items for welding work. If you purchase, for example, curved jaw Mole grips/locking pliers of 200mm (8 inches) then springs are available to buy from the manufacturer for that type and length.

Step 1 – Hold Mole grips

Take hold of your Mole grips/locking pliers, with the fixed handle and jaw on top and the end of the adjustment screw facing towards you.

Step 2 – Release jaws of Mole grips

Unscrew the adjusting screw by turning it anti-clockwise. This will release the jaws and handles and open them wide.

Step 3 – Remove screw of Mole grips

Unscrew the adjustment screw completely from the Mole grips/locking pliers.

Step 4 – Release link bar of Mole grips

Slide the top of the link bar out of the groove in the upper handle by using one hand to push the link bar away from you until it comes loose.

Step 5 – Unhook spring from upper handle of Mole grips

Use a small screwdriver or similar tool to expand the spring, and unhook it from the underside of the upper handle.

Step 6 – Unhook spring from lower handle of Mole grips

Use the same tool to unhook the spring from the eye of the lower jaw.

Step 7 – Hook replacement spring on lower handle of Mole grips

Take hold of the replacement spring and hook it onto the eye of the Mole grips/locking pliers.

Step 8 – Hook replacement spring on upper handle of Mole grips

Use the same tool to expand the spring and place it onto the small hook on the underside of the upper handle.

Step 9 – Return link bar of Mole grips

Slide the top of the link bar back into its groove in the upper handle by firstly pushing the bar away from you, lining it up with the groove, and then pulling the bar towards you until it stops and sits in place in the upper handle.

Step 10 – Return screw into place on Mole grips

Screw the adjustment screw back into place in the end of the upper handle.

Step 11 – Mole grips ready to use
