There are a number of different designs of marking knife. The differences are in the designs of the handles and blades, and the types of material they are made from.
Marking knives are categorised by the type of blade they contain. There are two types of blade:
Single-bevel blades
Double-bevel blades
Single-bevel blade marking knives
Single-bevel marking knives come with a flat back and a single-bevel edge blade. The flat back is the back of the blade which is placed against a guide when scribing.
This type of blade is suitable for marking along a straight edge, tracing hinges, the layout of angles and more.
Single-bevel marking knives come with either a right-sided or left-sided blade.
The flat back of the blade always needs to rest against the guide, otherwise the bevel creates a small gap between the guide and the cut being made.
Double-bevel blade marking knives
Double-bevel marking knives (sometimes called spear pointed) are versatile tools because they have the ability to cut in any direction. They can be used for a number of tasks including marking lines with a straight edge and providing guidelines for joints.
Double-bevel marking knives are the equivalent of having both left-sided and right-sided single-bevel marking knives.
