An edging iron, also commonly called an edging knife or lawn edger, is a gardening tool used to create neat and tidy lawn borders.
It has a half moon shaped blade at the end of a long, T-shaped handle, which is pushed into a lawn at its edge to remove unwanted areas of grass and soil.
An edging iron can be used to maintain existing lawns or create new borders. They can be used to create a neat gap between lawns and flowerbeds, patios and many other garden areas.
Edging irons can be used to begin cutting shapes into and out of a lawn for almost any purpose, whether it be to create a path, pond, barbecue pit or sun deck. However, if using the edging iron to neaten an existing lawn, ensure that not too much grass is removed, as repeated use shrink it noticeably.
The edging iron can be used on grass-less soil but, depending on the consistency, the result may not be quite as neat.
