To fully understand a rim lock cylinder we must first understand what is a rim lock. A rim lock is a commonly used security mechanism that consists of a box that is mounted onto a door containing a lock and a latch. They are only compatible with timber or wooden doors due to the fact they are mounted on to doors and require to be screwed in to be secured.

When it comes to security, rim locks provide a certain amount of security as they can slow down intruders from entering the property. However, due to the fact they are mounted onto the door, they can easily be targeted and broken off – providing access to your property.

As we touched on in the introduction a rim lock cylinder is the part of a rim lock that you interact with when opening a door. They are simply the external part of the lock in which you place the key in before turning it to release the latch. In this next section, we outline the advantages and disadvantages of using rim lock cylinders.

Advantages of Rim Lock Cylinders

Simple Mechanism – One of the biggest benefits of a rim lock cylinder is how easy the mechanism works and how easy it is to understand.

Affordable – Rim lock cylinders are affordable to buy in full sets for when you are choosing to secure a door using one.

Easy to Replace – In addition, they are also cheap to buy parts for – you can easily and cheaply buy a rim lock cylinder to change the key required to open the door without having to replace the whole mechanism.

Disadvantages of Rim Lock Cylinders

Easy to Bypass – The main drawback of a rim lock is the fact it is mounted onto doors which makes it relatively easy to bump off and bypass the lock. Some higher-security models exist and are much more adequate, however, these do come at an extra expense.

Insurance Policies – Due to their ease in manipulating, rim locks are not accepted by all insurers as sufficient security mechanisms in order to protect the external entrances of properties. If you wish to purchase a rim lock for use on external entrances it is always important to check its conformity with your insurance provider before installing it at your property. Failure to do so may result in your insurance being null and void at the point of a break-in.
